5 days already....?

Well it is hard to believe that 5 days have passed since we last posted anything.

We are now in Quesnel which is the small logging town that I lived in when I did my student exchange in 1998.

Since we last spoke to you our lives have gone something like this.

Tuesday 22 Nov: Late afternoon on Tuesday my friend Becky came and picked us up from Grama's Inn in PG . She came in her mum's vehicle which freakily is the same make and colour as my mum's. We took a drive up to UNBC (University of North British Columbia) to have a look at the campus and architecture. It is a really lovely campus and the buildings seem very nice, interestingly they are starting a School of Medicine there in the next couple of years. While finding our way out of PG we also passed the PG man, the worlds largest wooden man. Well that was until two drunken somebodies took out their chainsaw and cut him down at the knees. Now he is the worlds largest man that was made of wood but is now made of metal :). We drove from Quensel to PG in the dark, but I still recognised a lot of it and could feel my excitement growing as we rounded the corner on the hill and could see the lights. There is a bit of a logging boom going on at the moment. This is due to the fact that the last few winters have been very mild. Although nice for the residents not to have a series of -20deg days in a row, it is also nice for a little beetle that likes to attack the pine trees. A lack of cold weather that usually keeps them at bay has led to a dramatic increase in their population and this has meant curtains for the pine trees. So now it is a bit of a race to get the wood before it rots etc etc.

So as a result of this there is a little bit of a boom, that potentially will have a bust, but for now Walmart has moved in a long with a series of food chain groups. And Quesenl even has a sushi bar!! Craziness. In true Quesnel style though it is in the old pizza hut building..... We had dinner there the first night taht we were in town - not bad.

We went to Becky's sister Charity's house who was kind enough to lend us her couch and floor for a few nights until i cuaght up with alice and organised to stay with her.

Other highlights
Wednesday 23: Took Duncan to stroll around the town and mainstreet.
Thursday 24: Did the Quesnel River Walk with Holly (Beckys mum). Had lunch in a new little Italian takeway/cafe that makes its own pasta from scratch.. i know i can hear what you are thinking Quesnel is going upmarket. They also had espresso coffee, so Duncan was breathing a sigh of relief.
Friday 25: Checked out the Tourist information centre for a few things to do in the area. Did some shopping for bathers and pyjamas.
Saturday 26:This day was full of highlights. We decided to hike out to Deserter Falls, (aka Deep Creek falls), which according to the guidebook was about 2km from the road. Well it might of been, but not on the trail that we took.
Well that is kind of unfair i guess as for some of it we didn't acutally take a trail :). There was a bit of snow around and so as Becky had not done this particular trail in a while she was following the footprints of a man/woman and his dog. That was until we got down the bottom of a particularly steep and slippery bit and the trail was under snow. The foot prints went one way but Becky didn't think she wanted to go that way so for the next 3/4hr we were off roading, bush bashing, bush whacking or whatever you wanted to call it... sooo much fun... :)
After a little bit of climbing up, then down then up again we stumbled on the trail that took us the rest of the way. The falls were quite unique. We couldn't see them unless we wanted to swim in, and quite frankly, although Duncan thought it was summer, walking around with no jacket on, it was just too cold to swim :)

So now that we had found the trail we thought that getting back would be a piece of cake. Ha! What did we know. Further up on the trail it had eroded away, so once again it bush bashing time. We made it back to the car just as it was getting dark, feeling tired but very satisfied. It was a great afternoon. And never a dull moment with Becky around.

We went to the Quesnel Millionaires ice hockey game. They lost 3-2. Met one of the towns physiotherapists and got offered a job. If only i had my working visa :). Went back with Becky and sat out under the stars in the hot tub at the house where she is house sitting....... ahhhh

Sunday 27: In the morning we went to the local Farmers markets. They were great! There was a stall there with flavoured honey! Orange chocolate flavoured honey delish!!

Monday 28: Moved from Charity's house to Alice's (my host mum). Took Duncan for a stroll around the property found a beaver dam, and moose tracks, but no beavers or meese :)

Tues 29: I got up and helped alice with the chores this morning, thankfully that didn't need to be done til about 8:30am, because it was freakin' cold out ~ -12deg. Duncan and I went for a walk/run afterwards which was shall we say.... invigorating.

For a look at our weather check out the weather network check out www.weathernetwork.com and type in 'Quesnel' into the city box. This will give the weather currently and also the long range forecast. The warm weather in London will be a shock when we get there in January :)

I know I know this was really long, will try to do smaller briefer ones this week :)

ciao

To our Fans!!

(22 Nov 2005)
Sunshine has been redefined as any amount of natural light shining through any amount of cloud that causes objects to have shadows.

In saying this we love Prince George because there has been lots of sunshine and not just the type that fits the above definition, but real blue sky sunshine!! It is brighter and less rainy as we move away from the coast, but a lot colder.

Yesterday i went out without my hat and i could not hear anything because my ear drums and inner ear fluid was frozen..... oh the pain. Duncan was heard swearing because he was so cold.

The newest Harry Potter movie rocks!!!!! Loved it! The best one so far!

New galleries are up. We look forward to your comments

To Emma and Mark: not long to go now hope everything is cruising and you are excited.

Ciao

Gemma....

P.S. Stay tuned for photo display of how to tell it's nearly Christmas.

The last week or so from the slack one.... ;)

Right... well... its been a while since i posted and i seem to be leaving it up to Gem to do most of the work so even though she has written about the last few days i thought i'd put in my recollections...

Right, so first thing -
1. Naniamo... we had some fantastic company with the parents of a friend of Jesse who we stayed with in Vancouver. Convoluted but it worked. They were so accomodating as they picked us up, fed us some amazing food and provided us with a bed and stellar company for the night. They even took us to the bus terminal in the morning.

2. The bus ride... We got on a nice coach for the 7 hour ride to Port Hardy... then it was leaking fuel (better than one of the planes i guess) so we turned around and got on another coach - bugger - it was crappier... anyway, not an exciting trip but tolerable.

3. Port Hardy... wow... rain... lots of it... We sort of took the pedal off the metal here and relaxed in a hotel. We managed to spend a whole day in bed even. On Rememberance Day we went to the memorial service which was fantastic. Next stop... the ferry.

4. The ferry ride... we got on at 6pm, then got off and 3pm the next day... i'm so glad we had a cabin. Small beds but I fitted in fine so it was great. The current was a bit choppy for he first bit and well, it was dark already so we went to bed pretty early... then we got up when we heard the magic words.... "Last call for breakfast!" :) For some reason I thought the trip was 15 hours, but i guess 6pm-3pm is 21 hours so loooong trip.... but beautiful.

5. Prince Rupert... we got picked up at the ferry terminal by one of Satnam's (a friend of Gems she met in Sri Lanka) relatives... he took us to more relative and we got the full Indian hospitality... which ment strong tea and food... my god! so much food! And that dog! It was the fattest little daschund I have ever seen... it looked like it had cows udders!... it even got stuck on its back for a while like turtle :) Poor thing. After tea we started to head to Terrace but the roads were pretty icey so we stayed in Prince Rupert for the night... after a couple of Dram Buie (sp?) at a pub anyway :)

6. Trip to Terrace... we wandered round Prince Rupert for the morning which was nice and then started on the trip to Terrace. Apparently the trip is one of the 10 most beautiful trips in the world and it didn't disappoint... any pictures just don't do it justice. Even Satnam's "Uncle" said it was more beautiful than traveling through Kashmir and hey that scored a Led Zepplin song so it must be swanky... :)

7. Terrace... been pretty good weather here so far... some rain but on the whole not half as rainy as I thought. Satnam's hospitality has been more than we could ever have asked for and we have to thank him immensely. We have been on walks and seen First Nation Bands and eaten so much food (again), even Moose! Me and Gem have also been out on our own around the town where I got checked out by a girl in Staples... allll riiiight.... ;) We also managed to catch up with Quinton, one of Gems ex's, and we sat around and ate and talked... oh and drunk. This man makes his own wine, beer and moonshine! Vodka that actually tasted pretty good.... and was rather potent... well, that was until he broke out the good stuff from Alaska... 151 proof stuff. Actually hardly tasted at all which either is very dangerous or very nice... well that or it strips your taste buds on conact so you don't taste it at all! We also watched play, Nunsense which was very very funny, and loked at a few art galleries. On the whole, its been very good. Now we have a few days here before we head into Quesnel.

Speak more soon people... unless we can't get internet access in Quesnel.... *deep breaths... in... out*
Peace out.
Duncan.

PS and yes I know it is long but sue me... I don't have to live by my own rules... but I did make the font smaller so it 'seems' shorter :)

Thursday 17 November

(For those just tuning in there have been a couple of entries prior to this one since our remembrance day entry, so please scroll down)

Satnam took today off as well, so we did a little touring around town. We ventured on two nature walks close to town, had a look at some local art in the art museum, had a delightful lunch, and visited the local arts and craft fair put on for the early christmas shoppers.

Satnam had marinated and cooked us steaks of sock eyed salmon for dinner - delicious and we followed dinner with a play caled Nunsense - put on by the local theatre company. A bit of a spoof took the mickey out of nuns in general, particularly Catholics, but it was all tongue and cheek and good fun.

I shall leave you with a couple of profound thoughts that came to me while taking one of our walks on Grouchies Trail at Lake Else.
  • paying $300 for a pair of comfortable waterproof shoes is an excellent investment
  • squirrels sound like happy arab women :)

I think duncan would also like to say hello at some time too :)

Love Gemma

More

Well where was I....

Ah yes Tuesday 15th:

Satnam took the day off today, we owe him a lot his generosity has been limitless.

We jumped on the Nisga Hwy which heads north towards Alaska, then a little North -west toward the coast. We stopped at a couple of villages that belonged to the First Nations group Tsimshian. We also stopped at the Tseax Lava Beds http://www.volcano.si.edu/world/volcano.cfm?vnum=1200-10- rumour has it that many years ago First Nations children caught a fish, slit its back and stuck sticks in it that were on fire and laughed as it swan back down the river with smoking sticks sticking out of the water. As a result of this disrespect the cinder cone erupted - the last eruption in Canada. The lava dammed the Nisga river. When we saw it it was a beautiful stark contrast to the fresh snow that lay on it.

From there our next stop was a natural hot springs. You know what they say it is not what you know, but who you know, well we knew Satnam and he knew about this hotspring. We parked on the side of the highway, and climbed a short trail, it was only a 5 minute walk to the hotspring but we could smell the sulfur long before we got there. Hot water bubbled out of the ground and into a small man made pit, we had to dam the stream alongside and redirect some of the cold water into it as it was hot. We spent about an hour relaxing in the tub, before really really really quickly getting dressed (it was cold!)

We were lucky enough to be invited to Paul's (Satnam's boss also from Sri Lanka) for dinner that night and had roast moose, which was from last years hunt but really really yummy.

Wednesday 16: A boring 'personal administration day' you know chores and stuff. Although we did have an enjoyable dinner with Quinton and his partner. Some of you may remember Quinton from his visit to Australia a few years ago. He was kind enough to share with us his homemade wine, beer, vodka (aka moonshine) and Everclear. Everclear is for those who are unsure, 100proof whiskey, 75.5% from Alaska.....

apparently this is verging on the long side again so i will be back....

Oops :)

The last time we spoke to you it was Remembrance day, although that day seems so long ago.
I know I know, it has been a week.... so i will try and sum up the highlights in a nutshell :)
Saturday 12th: Rain rain go away..... Our last day in Port Hardy. The ferry to Prince Rupert left at 6pm. I had thought that we were travelling on the Queen of the North, but alas we were travelling on the only slightly less glamorous Queen of Prince Rupert. I was freaking out!! Although i really wanted to go on cruise the thought of 15 hours of sea sickness did not really appeal to me. So I dosed up. We had booked a cabin, which was soooo little with adorable (and very comfortable) little bunk beds, it was a good thing that we checked our luggage because it wouldn't have fitted in their with us. Fortuantely even with eating the slightly dodgy and overpriced food i wasn't seasick yay!! The scenery the next morning was so beautiful and after stepping briefly out onto the deck for some photos we decided that we could appreciate it a lot more looking out the window (brrr). We cruised through a variety of weather patterns one minute there was blue sky and wonderful sunshine, the next it was hailing. But what could we expect we were heading for the "wettest town in BC if not Canada". Once in PR Satnam was supposed to meet us (he is one of the guys that i met in Sri Lanka), however he had been held up at work so sent one of his family members to get us. We were taken to "Aunty's" a somoewhat removed older female relative of Satnam, who true to Indian tradition was called Aunty. She proceeded to feed us.... lots..... for afternoon tea; then after Satnam arrived, she fed us more for dinner..... we were beginning to feel like her dog Pepper, a daschund, (the fattest dog i have ever seen), whose stomach dragged on the floor and wouldn't go down the stairs cause he found it to hard to get back up.
We tried to drive to Terrace that evening but only got bout 25 minutes out before Satnam decided the roads weren't good enough. We turned around and stayed the night in PR.
The next morning after a cooked breakfast, we had a whirlwind tour of PR particularly down Cow Lane which was a bit of a tourist hub in the summer but little quiet this particular morning. Duncan sampled some Tim Horton's coffee which he decdided was inferior to Starbucks; and then we were off to Terrace. The drive between PR and Prince George is supposedly in one of the world's top 10 drives, particularly between PR and Terrace and it was certianly picturesque. Taking about 1 1/2 hours we headed inland through the growing mountains.
One of the highlights for me was an outhouse, strange i know but unlike roads that we are used to there were not roadhouses every so often, so by the time we saw this one in a picnic spot off the highway i was busting! A version of our famous long drop but it smelt beautiful, like cedar.....
We took a small detour to see if the local ski hill was open - nope. So headed into Terrace....
Duncan has 'educated' me that people prefer to read multiple shorter entries rather than one long one so i will be back.......

Friday 11 November

Remembrance day!!

Today was a quiet day. Canadians do not have an equivalent to ANZAC day so they have all their parades and ceremonies and services for Remembrance Day. They also have a public holiday, so that in combination with the weather (yup you guessed it) meant that there wasn't a whole lot to do.

We walked downtown in Port Hardy for the parade and ceremony in the main park, next to the Giant Carrot. The rain really started at about the same time the parade did, at times it was difficult to see what was going on over the umbrellas. We stood next to the ocean for the ceremony so sometimes it was difficult to hear what was going on too.

All in all it was lovely though there were representatives from all armed forces including the mounties and the First Nations in their traditional dress.

Following this ceremony there was a First Nation dedication of totem pole that was erected in honour of all First Nation members who have previously fought or currently involved in peace keeping. It was very interesting hearing the music, seeing the traditional dress and watching the dancing.

So as this is a short message here are some thoughts:
  • A&W do make the best burgers
  • I am not sure how I feel about automatically flushing toilets...... (quite common here in Canada)
  • Canadian chocolate is not as good as Australian, and I don't care what they say chocolate should never be mixed with peanut butter.
  • Oh Henry bars taste like snickers but still sound gay (that's a duncan 'thought')
  • Canada on the whole, has way better looking people than LA (also a duncan 'thought')
  • wireless internet rules!!
  • Bunnies are fluffy!

On saying that we are right at the end of the hotel and the signal is not strong so we will get the next gallery up as soon as possible.

Love Gemma & Duncan

PS. Duncan and I would like to wish my Mum and Dad a huge congratulations on their 39th Wedding Anniversary (Saturday 12 Nov)

Thursday 10 November: The latest...

Well it has been a while since we last updated, and the last entry from Duncan was well, succinct
:).

So apologies to all those who are casual browsers but our families like detail so here is a little bit more:

Saturday 5th Nov: Raining again, but this is no longer a surprise and really we expected this weather so every fine day is a bonus rather than the horrible ones raining on our parade.
We went to Grouse Mountain (
www.grousemountain.com) which is listed in the guide book as having the best view of Vancouver around. In summer it is apparently a hikers heaven with heaps of trails the most notbale being the Grouse Grind.... In winter it has several ski runs and ice skating. It also boasts an animal refuge and is home to two grizzlies. Well it was cold and wet at the bottom and by the time we finished the 8 minute sky car ride to the top it was snowing - and there was no view of Vancouver - nothing but white.

We had lunch at the 'Bistro' I had squid, and it came as squid tentacles and was garnished with mini squid - very hard to eat, you have to close your eyes while you put it in your mouth.

The ice skating rink had just opened but as we didn't know it was snowing we weren't appropriately attired. The refuge was a eight minute walk away from the main cabin, and we were told that the bears had been put away to bed for the day so we opted not to go out.

Sunday 6th Nov: Today was a bonus day - it wasn't raining!! Chinese Garden www.vancouverchinesegarden.com and Gastown www.gastown.org (as duncan wrote about below)

Monday 7th Nov: We needed to go shopping to get waterproof pants so headed down towards one of the sporting areas. As we walked we passed a discount sporting store www.westcoastsports.ca It is a dodgy website but for anyone coming to canada and wanting the best deals on snowboarding and skiing equipment new or second hand - this is the place to go and the service is great too. So we went in looking for pants and walked out with boards, boots and bindings and no pants he he!!

Rumour has it that if we decided that we don't want to keep this equipment once we get to the UK we can sell it for what we bought it for because the stuff is a lot more expensive over there.

We also tried getting a prepaid deal for Duncan's phone, but the services are almost more expensive than in Australia. I did by some really cheap pj bottoms (so now i can stop wearing my trackies). And we had A&W for lunch. Yay!! the first time since we got here - i shouldn't have broken the drought though because now i want more.

Tuesday 8th Nov: Our last day in Van before heading North and yup you guessed it raining again! We spent the day washing and packing etc, and buying our waterproof pants (from the same shop because they got new stock in) We returned to the famous Old Spaghetti Factory for dinner that night taking Jen to say thanks. We would have liked to have taken Jesse as well but he was away at work. It was a yummy and extremely filling meal, as if the standard three courses plus beer wasn't enough, Jenny and Duncan decided to order Hot Wings!! Hilarious, they got a little more than they bargained for and you could see the smoke coming out of their ears. The only dampener on the evening was a jackass redneck sitting at the table next to us who made our poor waitress cry

Leaving Vancouver: Wednesday 9 - Thursday 10 Nov:
What a comedy of errors this has ben so far. Jenny underestimated the time that it would take us to get to the ferry terminal so we missed the ferry that we wanted and had to wait 2 hours for the next one. We crossed to Vancouver Island in Nanaimo - and i didn't get sea sick yay!!.
The taxi driver picked us up and recommended we have lunch at the lighthouse bar and bistro - beautiful views over the ocean, with sea planes coming and going and the occasional leapord seal swimming by, but the food was a little ordinary. Jesse (Jen's brother) organised for us to stay at the parents of a friend of his from uni. They had a beautiful house right on the coast over looking the ocean. On a clear day you can see the mainland and whistler - this was not a clear day but it was still a wonderful view. They cooked us a wonderful dinner, Pork ribs, South African sausage, veges, pasta and rice (we provided some australian wine), it was great food, wine and conversation. Many thanks to Gary and Liz for taking such good care of us and R.I.P. to their dear dog Magnus!!

Gary dropped us off at the bus station and we got on greyhound, got 30 minutes of Nanaimo and the engine blew up (well that might be a little exaggeration) so we turned back and got on another less comfy bus.

The weather varied greatly on our trip north, as did the scenery. The road to Port Hardy followed the coast up for a lot fo the time and then cut inland amongs the mountains and farms, breathtaking. It was not raining when we arrived in Nanaimo so we load ourselves up with packs and bags etc and started on the 15 minute walk to the hotel. And then it started to rain. Being the hardcore backpackers that we are we called a cab :).

We are currently staying at the Glen Lyon Inn www.glenlyoninn.com which is offering fabulous rates as it is off season. We will stay here until saturday when we catch the queen of the north to Prince Rupert. Ciao till then

love Gem & Duncan

China Town and Gastown

Today we went into China Town and Gastown. China Town is where, strangely enough, there are a lot of Chinese... but most impressively there is a massive chinese garden. It was quite spectacular and the tour was very well done. I had no idea that so much thought and meaning went into each garden. This particular garden had everything bought in from China. There is a gallery (or will be) to the right with some pictures.

We also went into Gastown which is an old part of Vancouver. Lots of souvenir shops and art galleries... and a great place to eat called The Old Spaghetti Factory... with each meal you get a big sour-dough roll wth garlic butter, a salad, drinks, and an ice-cream... and the meals cost about $10 - $15... all right... :)

Jenny and Me (&the aquarium)

Today we went to the Vancouver aquarium. It was absolutely fabulous. We were hoping to walk the stanley park wall as well (as the aquarium is in Stanley park) but - give you one guess - it was raining again. That is until about 4:00 when the sun came out, yes actually came out, was casting a shadow and everything. I have decided that sunlight in vancouver can be redefined as any amount of light that casts a shadow, no matter how faint.... there does not necessarily have to be blue sky. Nonetheless this was real yellow light sun, with proper shadows.

The aquarium was awesome, you know me i love that kind of thing. It had a tropical section which included freshwater and saltwater, and amazon section which among fish (pirhana's [?sp]) had birds, frogs, lizards, turtles, tortisii, and a two toed sloth. It had a section highlighting the marine life of the BC coast.

Outdoors they had an Arctic section which had Beluga wales, the male Emac, weighing 3000pounds/kg (can't remember) either way very very very heavy. It also had dolphins, seals, a mammoth sea lion and sea otters.

The sealion was hilarious, the only one there he/she was such a madonna, posing for all the photos, he was flicking his head around like he had long blonde locks. It would have been very easy to stay and watch all day.

In the evening we played games, ate pasta and drank beer and wine with Jenny (picture inlcuded) Jenny is one of the girls i was at highschool with when i was on exchange. She and her brother have been kind enough to let us sleep on their futon. It has also been very helpful to have a bit of an inside view into what is going on in Van.

(Pictures to follow)

Vancouver, part 1

Well as my mum said in a recent email we started off racing and then there was nothing.
Our last installment seems so long ago, when really it is just a few days, and so much has happened. We flew Alaska Air from LA to Van, somewhat dodgy but only a short flight. Jenny was there to meet us at the airport which i was suprised as as i had given her a qantas flight number.. :) turns out she hadn't even checked the email but had just turned up at the time that i had given her, so was a little chomping at the bit as we were late.

Monday morning was an opportunity for us to catch up on some sleep (although i feel like i still am), when we did finally get up it was grey and dreary outside yet not raining too much. Even in the dreariness of the weather this is a beautiful city, highlighted by all the autumn colours and falling leaves. And of course Monday was Halloween! After going 'downtown' and buying umbrellas, that evening Jenny and her brother Jesse took us to Playlands which is an amusement park. It was frightnight at Playlands and had heaps of haunted houses to walk through where crazy people dressed in costumes jumped out at you to frighten you. Fortunately for us Jenny knew people so we got in for free yay!!

The shopping is here is fabulous, the fashions are varied and are not limited to the same one style like what tends to happen at home. Oh for more money to spend :) Duncan had bought a hat to keep his head warm though, we went to a proper hat store and had it fitted and everything. I love hats, i think i might buy a hat box and takes some hats with me :) And for those discerning shoppers on a less limited budget than ours, the thrift stores here are amazing, shabby chic is in my friends, they are certainly a few steps ahead of good sammies :)

Tuesday was a boring day, we were not allowed leave the house until we had done some trip organising, booking accommodation and transport.

Wednesday we got up with grand intentions of going down to Stanley Park which has a 5m sea wall that surrounds it, we were going to walk the wall and then go to the aquarium afterwards, but lo and behold it was raining... again (had it stopped? i am not sure), so we opted for a somewhate drier option of Granville Island Public Markets. This place is fabulous, a huge fresh food market, that on its outskirts is surrounded by arts and crafts, the Granville Island Brewery... like a giant Freo markets but not so much crap.

Unfortunately Thursday was another 'chores' day, we wanted to get some proper waterproof winter jackets before we head north and stuff. It was sooo traumatic, we walked and took buses around what felt like the entire south side going to all the sports stores and outdoor stores we could find before they all started blending into one.... we were up to our eyeballs in terms like 20,000 waterproofness, breathability, insulation arrgghh, finally at 6:30 i bought my jacket and shortly after that Dunc bought his. And that was only jackets, we haven't done gloves, goggles or pants yet....

Today we have determined to go to the Aquarium, rain hail or shine, and lo and behold it is raining again. It if fines up this afternoon then we will do the wall otherwise it may just have to wait until another day or another trip....

As you might have gathered from reading the above it hasn't really stopped raining since we got here. Max temps have been 6-8deg C but neither of us have had a problem with it yet. Although Duncan did put a jumper on the other day. He had been wearing his jumper quite a lot i must say, but finds it very annoying when he goes from outside to inside as he has to keep taking it off and putting it on. I think he is glad he has got his jacket now.

We have added some pictures to the gallery on the right. Feel free to browse.

Hope everyone is well
